History

Visual Novel

To Heart was originally released on the PC on May 23, 1997 as a hentai visual novel love adventure: the third in its series. Produced by Aquaplus/Leaf, it is credited to having helped to lift the company out of obscurity.

In 1999, two years after the original PC release, To Heart was converted to the PlayStation and released. All adult scenes and themes were removed from this version, however full voice acting and omake games were added.

Four years after, the game was again re-released on the PC, which was known as the PSE version. The version here used the PlayStation version as the basis for its conversion.

The game was included in the special To Heart2/To Heart bundle, which was one of three packages that To Heart2 was released with. The game was made for the PS2 and is not available individually.

ToHeart ~Remember My Memories~

is a Japanese anime and sequel to the original ToHeart anime. It features the old cast from the original series a year later. The story takes us to the graduation of the entire cast, (with the exception of Serika Kurusugawa, who is older than Hiroyuki by a year) and the life of Hiroyuki Fujita and Akari Kamigishi afterwards.

The character design has reverted to that of the original ToHeart game, instead of carrying on the adaptations made for the original anime.

Seven DVDs have been released since January 2005 in Japan. Although ~Remember My Memories~ is not produced by KSS Media Entertainment Company, voice actresses from the original anime series are used.

The Himeyuri twins from ToHeart2 actually make their debut appearances in ~Remember My Memories~ as speaking cameos.

WELCOME

To Heart (トゥハート Tu Hāto?) is a Japanese visual novel by Leaf/Aquaplus released in 1997 for the PC. It was later ported to the PlayStation and given voice acting. A second PC version, titled To Heart PSE was released containing the PlayStation version as well as omake games. The new computer version and PlayStation version had the adult scenes removed.

It was adapted into a 13-episode TV anime by KSS in 1999. A second anime, To Heart: Remember My Memories began airing from October 2004. To Heart is an influential visual novel with a large cult following; it has been the inspiration for a great deal of fan art in the dōjinshi community.

To Heart is credited to helping launch Aquaplus/Leaf from obscurity and secure its success in the visual novel market.

To Heart expended its cult following to non-visual novel players when the KSS anime and PlayStation version was released. Furthermore, the original anime was one of the first cases where an anime adaptation of a video game would prove to be successful among viewers whom did not play the game. The KSS anime became a stepping stone for famous voice actresses in regular anime, but ~Remember My Memories~ and the To Heart2 anime did not receive as much praise as the original anime series.

A similarly titled Japanese drama, To Heart - I want to die loving (To Heart ~恋して死にたい~ Tu Hāto ~ koishite shinitai?) has no actual relation to the game. However, the scenario writer acknowledged in a magazine interview that the popularity of the To Heart series did influence the title and story, and he drew on elements of To Heart when writing the drama of the same name.

Characters

Hiroyuki Fujita

(藤田 浩之 Fujita Hiroyuki)

Hiroyuki is the main male character and has a very dry attitude. He is surprisingly emphatetic though, but usually shows it through his actions rather than what he says or how he acts towards people.

Hiroyuki is also a childhood friend of Akari and lives alone, as his parents are away for work.

Note: Hiroyuki Fujita is the default name at the beginning of the game. His voice actor is only for the anime: in the game, he is the player and thus unvoiced.

Humoursly, In the first episode of Comic Party the main character, Kazuki has a dream in which he is placed into Hiroyuki's shoes.

Akari Kamigishi

(神岸 あかり Kamigishi Akari)

Akari is Hiroyuki's childhood friend. She will almost always go to wake Hiroyuki up in the morning to go to school. She is especially fond of teddy bears, with special emphasis on the one that Hiroyuki gave her during their childhood. Both Akari and Hiroyuki have known each other since kindergarten and they are extremely close. She is very much in love with Hiroyuki and spends a lot of time around him. Akari likes to call Hiroyuki with the -chan suffix attached, despite his occasional protests. Akari is very adept at cooking and is a member of the school's Cooking Club.

In the game she is just one of several female characters, but in the anime she adopts a central role, acting as narrator, with her romantic aspirations forming the main recurring theme of the series. In one episode (#7) she actually supplants Hiroyuki as the main character when she befriends the psychic girl Kotone: in all other episodes it is Hiroyuki who befriends the "guest" character of the episode. (In the manga Akari has a less pivotal role (though still a major one), and it is Hiroyuki who befriends Kotone.)

The long term influence of To Heart and Akari Kamigishi on otaku culture is illustrated by the character design of Tsukasa Hiiragi from the manga and anime series Lucky Star. Tsukasa's look, complete with trademark yellow ribbon, appears to have been based on Akari; a fact that has been mocked a few times within the series.

Shiho Nagaoka

(長岡 志保 Nagaoka Shiho)

Shiho first met Akari, Hiroyuki and Masashi during the first year of Junior High School. She is more of a tomboy than Akari (A real B-type, according to the Japanese), and often finds herself at odds with Hiroyuki. She is feisty and aggressive, yet close to Akari.

She is a real gossip fanatic, often coming up with random ideas that she titles "Shiho's News" or "Shiho's Advice". Most of what goes on in school and the students do not pass by her unnoticed. However, according to Hiroyuki, "90% of what she says isn't true." Though this is a bit of a hyperbole, Shiho does sometimes get her facts wrong.

Multi (HMX-12)

(マルチ Maruchi)

  • Voice actress: Yui Horie (Japanese), Lenore Lenore (English)
  • Birthday: June 19. Blood Type: O (after March 19 in game). Constellation: Gemini. 3 Sizes: 68/52/73

An experimental humanoid maid robot from the HM (Human Maiden) series robots made by Kurusugawa Electronics. She was sent to Fujita's school to learn how to behave like a human.

Multi is a very cheerful girl who loves to clean. Unfortunately, she isn't very good at it nor household chores, which contradicts her purpose. In the anime, Hiroyuki and Akari help Multi to improve her skills.

In order to charge her batteries, she needs to be connected to a laptop with a cable stored in her hand.

The name 'Multi' comes from the entry line '98MULTI' from NEC's PC-9800 series computer.

Multi is one of Japan's most popular fictional robot girls.

Tomoko Hoshina

(保科 智子 Hoshina Tomoko)

  • Voice actress: Aya Hisakawa (Japanese), Lisa Ortiz (English)
  • Birthday: September 10. Blood Type: A. Constellation: Virgo. 3 Sizes: 88/57/85

Tomoko is a native of Kobe and speaks the Kansai dialect. She has a very serious, responsible nature, and serves as the class president. Her seriousness is conveyed by her tightly bound hair and coke-bottle glasses, though she is quite pretty when she removes these features.

She moved from Kobe as a result of problems between her parents. Her quiet and concentrated nature is one of her ways of hiding her problems and she will often keep to herself.

Serika Kurusugawa

(来栖川 芹香 Kurusugawa Serika)

  • Voice actress: Junko Iwao (Japanese), Carol Jacobanis (English)
  • Birthday: December 20. Blood Type: O. Constellation: Sagittarius. Height: 159cm. Age: 17. 3 Sizes: 85/53/83

Serika is a member of the Kurusugawa family, which is exceedingly wealthy and owns many assets, including the labs which produced Multi and Serio. She speaks very quietly and it is very difficult to hear what she says unless standing right beside her - as a result, we often see Hiroyuki repeat what she just said.

She is addressed as "ojou-sama" (a very respectful title) by the family servants and is picked up by a limousine everyday. Serika is also very much into the occult and is the sole member of the school's Occult Research Club. She is also often protected by her butler, Sebastian, which has become the source of comedy in many dojinshi.

Ayaka Kurusugawa

(来栖川 綾香 Kurusugawa Ayaka)

  • Voice actress: Junko Iwao
  • Birthday: January 23. Blood type: O. Constellation: Aquarius. Height: 161cm. Age: 16. 3 Sizes: 88/56/85

Ayaka is Serika's younger sister. Despite looking similar, they have totally different character personalities. Ayaka is very outgoing and confident, and enjoys martial arts. They get along very well, but go to different schools and have different paths in life.

Lemmy Miyauchi

(宮内レミィ Miyauchi Remii)

  • Voice actress: Rumi Kasahara (Japanese), Karen Thompson (VA) (English)
  • Birthday: December 21. Blood Type: A. Constellation: Sagittarius. Height: 174cm. Age: 16. 3 Sizes: 92/59/86

Lemmy is half American, half Japanese - her full name is Lemmy Christopher Helen Miyauchi. She speaks Japanese with a stereotypical American accent, and often makes mistakes with the meanings of Japanese sayings. She also has a tendency to slip in English words during conversations when she has the chance. She also ends a lot of her sentences with "-ne" and overuses the word "fantastic".

She is exceptionally tall and is the only major character who is taller than Hiroyuki. Her height, bust, blue eyes, blonde hair, and unusual personality is how her foreign blood is represented which is typical of many Japanese series that contain foreigners.

Lemmy is also a member of the kyudo club (Japanese archery).

Aoi Matsubara

(松原 葵 Matsubara Aoi)

She is a practitioner of a particular style of martial arts known as "Extreme Rules". However, because she doesn't adhere to the more traditional martial arts such as Karate, she is spurned by the mainstream martial artists. She is still a very determined girl.

Kotone Himekawa

(姫川 琴音 Himekawa Kotone)

  • Voice actress: Kyoko Hikami (Japanese), Amy Kincaid (English)
  • Birthday: October 12. Bloodtype: B. Constellation: Libra. Height: 156cm. Age: 15. 3 Sizes: 77/54/78

A girl with psychic powers, but is unable to fully control them. When she was introduced, it is revealed that she does not have control over her psychic powers; instead bottling them up until she can no longer restrain them anymore, causing devastation. She seems to like udon and many doujinshi portray her using her psychic powers on udon in a number of ways. She is a popular subject of Doujinshi due to her unusual abilities. Her psychic power is psychokinesis in the game, and prediction in the anime series. This has changed back into psychokinesis in ToHeart ~Remember My Memories~.

Rio Hinayama

(雛山 理緒 Hinayama Rio)

  • Voice actress: Ikue Ōtani (Japanese), Elisabeth Morinelli (English)
  • Birthday: November 24. Blood type: B. Constellation: Sagittarius. Height: 155cm. Age: 16. 3 Sizes: 70/54/76

She can be unlocked after completing Akari's scenario. She spends time on getting part-time jobs, and is a fan of romance manga and anime. She is very self-sufficient, and has several part-time jobs including selling cakes at Christmas and delivering the paper. She has the feature of "hair antennae" (a pair of long hairs that stick straight up), which is rampant in some anime but unique in this one. Her "antennae" are often highlighted in Doujinshi, often being given movement as if they were actual appendages.

Secondary characters

Masashi Sato

(佐藤 雅史 Satō Masashi)

Masashi is Hiroyuki's closest male friend. He grew up with Hiroyuki and Akari, and attended the same kindergarten and Junior High School.

He is adept at football and generally has a soft, friendly character.

Serio (HMX-13)

Serio (セリオ?) is Multi's younger sister: an advanced successor of Multi, but without emotions. Serio was sent with Ayaka to Sanyo Girls' School for field testing and speaks using formal Japanese. She is technically superior to Multi and is equipped with a satellite system capable of communicating with and storing data on the Kurusagawa mainframe host computer.

Serio is more effective than Multi as a maid robot but because she lacks emotions, does not feel as human. She does have a heart, and tries to help people even though she may fail as she is unable to understand the complex emotional aspects behind them - an issue dealt with in the drama CD Piece of Heart.
